Week #47 ~Calling Home!!

Hello All,

This week was great! It was cold, but not super cold so it was great! Its maybe 45 degrees but from hot all day everyday it's quite a good change! It’s a good thing I have my sweaters here!

This week we had a baptism! So it was an eventful fun week!!!

The first adventure of our week was on Monday night we taught our final lesson to our investigator.  She is a 12 year old girl who is the daughter of a less active.   Her name is Pilar pronounced like pea laar. Best of all we had the chance to talk to our families.   It was so nice because her grandparents were there and they are recent converts and so they basically taught the whole lesson.  They just got it before us! They both really love the gospel and were so excited to have another family member as a member of our church.

This week I was a little sick and trying to get better today, I feel a little bit better. I am definitely not as sick as our district leader apparently was.  We had divisions all day, one was to have an interview for the baptism.  After the interview, we had lunch and it was a soup that has been breaded! Yeah really cool and delicious.  I am not sure how they made it but it was really good.   That night while we were walking home he decided to pass out. Hah, just flat out passed out face first on the street while walking. After calling a few people we took him to his house and had someone who knows a little more medical knowledge then me look at him. I think he is doing fine now.

Then we had a baptism for our investigator Pilar! We filled the baptismal font all day because the hot water is so slow! It was great, lots of investigators were in attendance and less actives of the family. It was a great opportunity to talk to them and for them to hear talks about the importance of baptism and the Holy Spirit.  The elders sang in a choir, so us and 4 other elders and 2 sisters sang a medley of nearer my God to thee in 4 different languages and it was pretty cool.   Then her grandfather who just got the priesthood baptized her and it was really sweet.   I was tutoring him on how to baptize all week with the correct form of baptism and the prayer and everything.  It was a very special time!

Then on Sunday was the longest Sunday of my whole life! I gave a talk, a surprise talk may I add form my loving bishop.  I talked about the prodigal son and how it should be called the prodigals sons and how they both were lost the first one with worldly things and the other son with more mental ambitions, wants and greed. The day went so slow because I was so excited to call me family at night.   I called on a laptop in the chapel and it was so amazing! I talk to them and got to see my favorite people.  I now feel like I have recharge my batteries.   It was so great!!!

Fun Facts about my area in Argentina:
  • ·      Most homes in my area have dirt floors. Some have pieces of carpet they put down.
  • ·      Everyone sits on hard folding chairs.
  • ·      People cannot afford extra chairs so when you travel you bring their own.
  • ·      Often, people have nothing but a 50 inch,4k TV.
  • ·      They love to pour new cement pads in their back yards every year.
  • ·      Argentines love their mopeds, once I saw a family of 5 on one moped and the mother was nursing her baby on the back.
  • ·      Our ward house is the nicest building in the town.
  • ·      People are expected to move out and live with their girl/boyfriend when they are about 16 years old.
  • ·      Families buy a plot of land and build a house in the back of the lot, kids build in front of their parents and so on until they reach the street.
  • ·      95% of the streets are dirt with cement curbs. Pave Argentina ran out of $.
  • ·      Kids go to school 3 hours a day 12-3 pm.  If you are a bad student you go to night school which is only 2 hours a day.
  • ·      You can stop school when you are 16.
  • ·      All public school is free even to become a medical Doctor.  That takes only 2 years. Yes, full-fledged DR.

Love you all,

Week #46 ~Baptism High Five!

Hola famillia !

I am doing great! Just hoppling around and trying to get people to go to church! My knee is giving me some pretty good pain, but I am still trudging along.

This week was great like always! We have some great progressing investigators and with some luck we can get another one baptized!  We helped with a baptism of our ward yester with a little boy and it was super nice! They even made a libro de Mormón cake! haha

This week we divisions again and I got to do service in another area.  It was very unusual we were cleaning a patio for them and they are laterally the people from the TV show hoarders buried alive. I made a vow I will always do whatever it takes not to be like them.   It was disgusting, we cleaned their patio and it took all day.  Everything we were throwing away he would take maybe half of it out.  He would say it was valuable or he could fix it and sell it. All I could think the whole time was what my dad would do. I bet he would have advised to wait until night and just throw it ALL away, it was literally a dump.  He had maybe 30 old bikes and so many old bottles it was crazy!

After that we had a great lesson with one of investigators! It was so nice!  She lives with and is a caretaker of a less active woman who is extremely old!  So, it makes a great spot to have a lesson with a member present.  We taught the gospel of Jesus Christ and she excepted to be baptized! It’s kind of weird, we normally don’t ask the baptism question that early, we normally wait to the second lesson.  Because the investigators get scared with having to change any aspect of their life’s. So, my comp and I looked at each other and they really don’t prepare us for exactly what to do after they accept!  So, we just high fived her! haha She was caught a little off guard but we all laughed. It was great! I also bought a knee brace today to allow me to continue working with my knee problems! It’s hurts pretty good but with enough drugs and ice and a thick brace I can still hobble out the door and get back to the house at night! I am improving I think I guess we will see!

Love you lots,

Elder Vance

Week # 45 ~What would life be like...?

Hola Famila,

Como estan! I am doing great! A little sore but I am doing great! This week was very hot! I have no idea why, it started to get cold and I was super excited. I thought, I deserved a little cold weather to cool down my day.  This week peaked at the high 90s and are swarming in mosquitoes, but that’s ok!

This week we had divisions with the district leaders.  We had a secret mission, hoping to help my companion out a little bit was the goal of lighting a fire of missionary work under him. The new comp of the district came with me it was super fun.   He was from a providence in Argentina called Missions.   So, he is a missionary from missions haha!   I thought it was very funny!   I think he has heard it to many times. We had a great lesson with a new investigator who is living with a less active old woman.  So, it’s like two birds one stone.  We also had a great service day for a recent convert.  He wanted us to chop fire wood for his house and it was a great break from our normal cement jobs! It was super great and after words his brother in law came over and he is a testigo de Jehovah.  He tried to prove to us that we don’t believe in the bible. Which is a weird thing to try to do tell someone else what they believe and don’t believe in. But that’s ok he was quite impressed when he asked me questions about the bible and I had luckily just been reading about it.  It is the baptism of Christ.   I open to and read him the scripture he asked for and I highlighted it just that morning during my studies! Wooo haha I think it was inspiration to re-read that part just that morning

We also had a stake conference!  It was super great!!! We went with one of our investigators and it a fantastic meeting! We went to Saturday and Sunday sessions but the theme was how to make a happy marriage and how to grow as a small family. So not very applicable just yet.  Maybe someday haha.   It was really great and president spoke and he asked a question about what would life be like without our church and I thought what would our life be like with the Book of Mormon? At first I thought it would be a little different but on the contrary it would be way different! Just think what part of your life would be changed if we didn’t have it! Today I saved a bird from a fence at our church! Poor little guy was stuck in a net but I got him down his name is Reggie.  I am finding joy in service big or small everywhere.

I love you all,
Elder Vance

Just missing Makenzie, my twin, but I can pretend!
