Week #39 ~My Birthday Wish...MEAT!

Hello Family,
Thank you for the birthday cake.  I finally baked that cake u sent me!  Blue Funfetti my favorite; a little slice of home and birthday happiness!  A member in my ward remembered it was my birthday and came up to me and wished me happy birthday.  The ward told me happy birthday but my comp didn’t.

My comp speaks very little Spanish; he prefers his native language Portuguese.  We’re struggling and it’s a challenge.  He does lots of stupid things and is total mess.  I thought I was messy; not even close to this guy.  When I say something, my comp just laughs and leaves the room.  I’m not sure if he understand me, or Spanish, or just doesn’t care to communicate?  I am trying but it’s hard!

si yo se este es muy duro por mi pero este es un oportunidad a aprender una lección buena
haha thanks!

I am trying to work harder than ever.   It’s hard because I am obliged to do all the talking for the two of us and do everything else for that matter.  I apparently need to learned much through my trials beginning with patience and love for a difficult companion.

On a happier note, I was able to eat a large BBQ for my birthday meal on Monday, YUMMY meat!! Yeah!!  It was an awesome celebration.

I am doing good and working hard.   Thank you for all the birthday wishes they really made my week great!

Love,
Elder Vance

Week #38 ~A little weird but great members!

Hey guys! How’s it going?   I am doing great!

Monday
We had p-day my first in Bahia and it was super fun!  We got to know the city a little by walked around everywhere. It was really different, it’s a pretty big city and we had a lot of fun.   Today we got to use a super cool cyber store to email.   Computer gaming is really big here so there are places with computers just for gaming.  We got a lot of weird looks when we were JUST emailing.  There were little teams of 6 kids who were about 12 year olds playing black ops! It was so funny to see how crazy they are.  haha

Tuesday
We didn’t have that much to say because we passed for old investigators and passed contacts of the other elders. We did have a little bit of luck with  a few people talk to us.   Not as many as we would have liked. We had a few good new contacts and taught a few lessons.

Wednesday
We got another list of older people to pass by and members that we are trying to pass by.  We are trying to get to know them a little bit and it’s a very hard.   Most people think we are door to door sales men.  I guess we kind of are, most of the time, selling Gods Plan of Happiness.   I tell the people that the things we are selling are free or we aren’t salesmen. I guess what we are selling is 10 percent of what you make so it’s a pretty good deal for Happiness. It is harder here in the city, the people are hard and untrusting.

Thursday
We did divisions with the zone leaders, they called us the night before and said please be at the bus terminal at 4:00 in the morning to begin.   So, it was a VERY long day.   All day we just went to different place to pay rent and do paper work for elders and sisters in our mission.   We literally walk so much, but it was fun to be with another elder and see another part of the city!

Friday
We passed by for an old contact and turns out he was wondering when the elders would pass by again. It’s super awesome he has 3 roommates and one is a member that’s inactive the other three want to listen to our messages! It is fantastic because they are all trying to find work, so they are always home! hjahah
It makes it easy to pass by and it was super great.   I taught the first lesson and I talked a lot about prayer and how the God answers our prayers in different ways.  The member was like Wow, I was waiting for an angel to tell me about stuff and it was super cool to answer his questions.  It was so great he told us that we basically were answering his exact questions before he could ask them. We were kind of like receiving his thoughts like Amon perceived the thoughts of king Lamoni and answering his questions before he asked them. It was a super neat experience.

Saturday
We contacted all day in the morning and that night we contacted more because we still don’t know anyone that well.  It was hard but it was good, we walked a lot of new streets and talked to a lot of investigators.   We could make appointments for later in the week so it was good!

Sunday
We had a great day on Sunday and had some great lessons.   We then passed for less actives after church and the bishop gave us a list titled ‘a little weird but great members’ for the elders to pass. haha Perfect just the list I want and I can say the title is very true!

I love you all and am praying for you!

Week #37 ~Transferred To Terrada!

Hello Family,
I have had a very busy but exciting week.  I am alive and well and ready for a busy working week ahead.  I have my work cut out for me!

Monday
We had transfer calls and I got my first transfer to Terrada, which is a suburb of Bahia Blanca!  It’s on the outskirts of Bahia Blanca and it’s going to be quite an adventure!  I packed in the morning and visited families all day, in preparation to leave.

Tuesday
I got on a bus at 12:30am, so I guess that counts as Tuesday morning.   I was in a bus for 8 hours until I got to the Bahia Blanca terminal.   Then I waited there until 7:00 pm for my new companion’s bus to arrive.  Then we took a taxi to our new apartment. The travel was a little hard because of the weight of my 2 bags. I acquired some barbells, which added to the weight of all my stuff so needless to say my bags were very heavy.  Never the less, my bags and I made it! Ha-ha My new companion is Elder Firmo who is from Brazil.   I am training him because he needs two transfers with a trainer to be a ready for senior comp status.   He has one with his mission papa (first trainer) and I will be number two. We have a bit of a language barrier as he only speaks Portuguese and not much Spanish.  He doesn’t like to study or speak Spanish. So my adventure has just begun!

Wednesday
In the morning, I went to do some paper work in the mission office. Then I went to another building to get a bus pass for the city, apparently that is how we get around in the big city.  I’m looking forward to not walking everywhere, which is what I’ve been doing for the past 7 months.  The bus pass line was about 3 ½ hours long; it was so long!   After the wait, we went to our apartment and unpacked and cleaned our house.  The apartment is all right, the washer is broken, and the house was a big mess!  We learned they have a really bad RAT problem (Mom would love this place).  No rattraps to be found, only rat poison.  Apparently the rats are in the pipes.  SO we are using the old boot & broom control method!  It may be the local sporting event?

Later, because the previous elders left no information about the area, map, investigators, nothing, and it had been white washed (2 elders move out & 2 elders move in), so we start from scratch.  So I decided to begin by walking the area with pen and paper to create a map and become familiar with our new area.  The town reminds me of Mexico because of all the street venders and people trying to sell you stuff on the streets.   Everything looks like it needs to be torn down and rebuilt for safety.  We have nothing to go off, at my new town, but it’s going to be a great fresh start. I guess?

Thursday
We had 2 lessons with current and menos activos.   It lessons were pretty good in spite of a difficult time finding their houses.  The map I drew of our area helped a little.

Friday
We passed for a less active and it was super cool.  It was really far from our lunch appointment and when we passed she said she was praying for elders to come by because she thought that the only ones that could help her were the elders. She didn’t have our number or any phone, and she lives super far away.  When we arrived at her house she was like, “elders I was praying so hard that you would find me.”   It was so wonderful because I was planning to work near our lunch appointment but decided last minute that we should head out farther to that area.  I wasn’t sure why just felt like we should.  It goes to show you, we should always listen to that still small voice & just DO IT!

Saturday
The bishop gave us a list of menos activos and old investigators, so we tried to pass by those on list the entire day.  We had some people talk to us but it was some sort of a celebration day here so we didn’t have much success but that’s ok.  We got to know the area better so that was something good for the day!

Sunday
We had church and we greeted all the members at the door.  We also had the opportunity to give our testimonies in sacrament.  It was super great.  Apparently our ward is like a retirement community because most of the members are grandparents and great grandparents!  It’s so funny, about 90 percent of the ward put their walkers on the side of the benches in the isle.  When it was time for us to walk to the front to talk, we had to dodge and high-step it through and old-person obstacle course just to make it to the pulpit! Ha-ha.  But it was super great!
